Two words which describe his artwork are "empathy" and "community."

Through dynamic brushstrokes Xiaodong creates movement and implied texture throughout the painting, from the people fishing to the splashes and ripples on the water. Color is also used to mimic landscape, light and shadows cast from the sun, and create volume in the subjects.

Xiaodong uses saturated colors, a blue cap, and stripes on the man standing up to emphasize his presence in the piece. It is clear he is the focal point in this artwork. It is also possible that the position of all the people seated on buckets intentionally leads to the man with his fist in the air, suggesting implied line. The gazes of most of these subjects also leads to the striped man.
